"Why do I have Spider Veins, and how can I prevent them?"
How much do you know about spider veins? You probably know spider veins appear as red, purple, or blue looking "little tree branches" or "spider webs", and are close to the surface of the skin, but do you know why spider veins occur?
The heart pumps blood filled with oxygen and nutrients to the entire body. Arteries carry blood from the heart toward the other parts of the body. Veins carry oxygen-poor blood from the body back to the heart.
The squeezing of leg muscles, particularly the calf muscle, pumps blood back to the heart from the lower body. Veins have valves that act as one-way flaps. These valves prevent the blood from flowing backwards as it moves up the legs. If the one-way valves become weak, blood can leak back into the vein and collect there. This problem is known as venous insufficiency. An increase pressure in the leg veins cause the capillaries closest to the skin to fill with blood. A weakening of the vein wall due to age, hormone levels, heredity, and several other factors can occur contributing to the development of spider veins.
While we cannot completely stop the formation of spider veins we can follow certain measures to help decrease the severity:
Exercise Daily- Walking, climbing stairs, cycling, and swimming will "pump" deoxygenated blood out of the legs, reducing pooling of blood and pressure in the veins.
Maintain a Proper Body Weight - Keeping your body at its ideal weight via diet or other measures will reduce excess pressure and stress on your veins.
Watch What You Wear - Wearing tight fitting clothing can cause vessel constriction or injury. Wearing flat or low heels requires greater activation of calf muscles during walking which improves leg circulation.
Avoid Prolonged Sitting or Standing - Moving your feet up and down during long car or airplane trips activates your calf muscles. When taking long car rides consider stopping for short walks every few hours.
Wear Compression Stockings - Wearing graduated compression stockings provides a counter-pressure to aid in venous blood flow to the heart. Compression hose may also reduce the risk of forming a deep vein blood clot. Consider wearing them when taking long car or airplane rides.
