QUESTION: What is a Blackhead?
ANSWER: A blackhead is formed when a sebaceous gland secretes excess oil in a pore, which generally mixes with dead skin cells and other debris to solidify. The dark color is caused not by dirt but by the discoloring effect of air on this mixture in the clogged pore. An Infection may cause it to develop into a pustule or boil. Blackheads are commonly seen on the forehead, chin and nose and can be removed with chemical peels, Retin-A, or by an aesthetician during the extraction step of a facial treatment. Daily use of products containing alpha and betahydroxy acids such as Obagi's Exfoderm Forte helps minimize clogged pores by flushing the pore of debris. Avoiding the use of over the counter cleansers and moisturizers with ingredients that clog the pores is also key to reducing the likelihood of future blackheads.
